Book Review: Annihilation

Book Review: Annihilation

This book, Annihilation, is the first book in the Southern Reach Trilogy written by Jeff Vandermeer. Area X is a place of mystery where expeditions are sent out to explore it. This book is about the twelfth expedition. Area X is completely cut off from the rest of the world. Vandermeer does not explain why it has been cut off or how Area X came to be. That is something that I really wish would have been explained. Hopefully it will be explained in the other two books. There are four women on the expedition: an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist, and a biologist. The biologist is the narrator of the story. Their mission, while in Area X, is to collect samples and journal about their experience. In the other eleven expeditions something has gone terribly wrong, and the twelfth expedition is no exception. I was so encaptured by this book and would give it 5 out of 5 stars. I am so very excited to be starting the next book, authority.
